Ed Sheeran: What is his favorite song on his new album 'Subtract'

Ed Sheeran's favorite song 'Subtract' describes a relationship where there are no strings attached.

Ed Sheeran has revealed his favorite song from his new album 'Subtract'.

The British singer and his 'Subtract' co-creator and producer Aaron Dessner of The National sat down with Apple Music's Matt Wilkinson to discuss their collaboration on the album.

"It's completely different to any way I've worked before," Ed Sheeran said of his collaboration with Aaron Dessner.

"He comes with a finished product and says, 'Write what you feel.' And there's no "Oh, this verse sounds a little weird" or anything like that. You write from your mind on the page and the song is ready,” he described.

“And then you go in and basically shape it. And if anything, we got more out of the recordings he sent us,” he continued.

Aaron Dessner noted that they "hit it off" right away, adding, "It was like a little wildfire. When we got together, we said let's try a few things and we ended up with about 36 songs."

With a plethora of songs showcasing his masterful songwriting, it's hard to imagine Ed Sheeran having a favorite song on 'Subtract'.

However, it has a special connection with the process of creating the song "No Strings", a special ballad.

'No Strings' is the penultimate track on Ed Sheeran's standard edition album 'Subtract' and details a relationship where there are no strings attached.

“It just came from Aaron being on the piano and me singing. And then we put it down and it was like the song didn't matter. And when I listen to it again, it's now my favorite song on the record,” he said.

The interview took place as part of Apple Music Live, which returned for a second season with Ed Sheeran performing 'Subtract' in its entirety for the first time.
